Biology 1
Syllabus for Biology 2018-19
Office Hours: Wednesdays 12:10-3:00
Overview: Biology is devoted to the study of living things and their processes. Throughout the year this course provides opportunity for students to develop scientific process skills and an understanding of the fundamental principles of living organisms. Students will explore biological science as a process, cell structure and function, genetics and heredity, evolution and classification, unifying principles and diversity of living organisms and their ecological roles.
Materials and Supplies:
Chromebook (school supplied)
Access to Summit Learning Platform
Projects - Students will complete 4-5 projects this year in class. Through these projects, students will practice many cognitive skills that include identifying patterns and relationships, oral presentation, making connections and inferences, and many more. It is recommended that work on projects be completed during class time, but if a student does not complete the assignment by the due date, the student will need to complete work at home.
1. Scientific Discoveries
2. Evolutionary Story of a Living Thing
3. DNA Barcoding
4. Ethics of E-Waste
5. Bioremediation
Focus Areas - Students are self-directed to learn content by choosing from a playlist to review concepts. There are 9 focus areas for Biology, each focus area includes 3 objectives, with content assessments for each objective. Students demonstrate understanding by completing content assessments and passing with an 8 out of 10. This can be completed during personal learning time at school or at home with Internet access.
1. Evidence for Evolution
2. Natural Selection and Speciation
3. Food Webs & Energy Pyramids
4. Cells
5. Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration
6. Climate Change Basics
7. Structure of DNA
8. DNA to Protein
9. Punnett Squares
